Activated Carbon Information
Activated carbon is used for the filtration of distilled spirits, and is a polishing step to strip the spirit of impurities such as aldehydes, aminos and fusil oils that can result in undesirable colors, odors or tastes after distillation.
By filtering with activated carbon these impurities become trapped within the enormous pore structure that activated carbon offers.
Vodka, moonshine and other clear alcohols typically utilize activated carbon as the carbon does an exceptional job of removing tastes and colors.
Activated carbon may not be a good choice for the filtration of whisky or schnapps where you want to keep some of the process color and taste.
